Beetle, Giant Flayer

Brain sucking giant flea. A small beast.

Imagine a cat-sized flea with a green iridescent exoskeleton. A long probe coils from its mouth. An opportunistic predator.

It can detect nearby movement, walk on any surface, even upside down and jump 20’ without momentum. It can’t see well.

Attacks (1/round)

Attach. The giant flayer jumps on a target’s head. Unless the target successfully dodges the beetle, it is attached to it. Until detached, attack rolls below 10 hit the attached target instead of the beetle.

Probe. The giant flayer inflicts both physical and willpower damage (1D2) to a target it is attached to as it starts extracting its brain.

  1. Monster: 2D4 giant flayers.
  2. Lair: A damp cave echoing with eerie vibrations and filled with red eggs.
      OR
    Omen: Underwater-sounding cricket noises, close.
  3. Spoor: A body, its eyes popped and its brain sucked dry.
  4. Tracks: Underwater-sounding cricket noises, far away.
  5. Trace: Smashed giant flayer.
  6. Trace: A dried, brainless body.
Salvaging the body

Giant flayer shell can be used for armor but has 1-6 chance to break on each hit. A more common use would be to ground it to make a green iridescent dye.

The giant flayer beetle is an original creation of Richard J. Leblanc Jr. When adapting it to the GLoG, I made it slightly less sturdy but a bit more reliable: the original was only threatening when rolling a critical hit, this one does intelligence damage more often. — SaltyGoo
